What Price, Fame?

I was sitting and thinking today, as I often do, about the state of the world. You know, what with the breakneck pace of advancement and discovery, and the frenetic speed of technology development, various concepts that have remained static for long periods of our lives have changed significantly. Some things need tweaking in their definitions, some concepts need to be thrown out or retired, and some need heavy examination before utilizing them.
Let me explain; I was thinking today about an unusual little phenomenon dealing with a situation close to home: I am sort of famous. Kind of. By 'famous', I mean that people who I have never met know me based on an artistic expression, and their enjoyment of it. I have a semi-regular podcast, that some of you listen to, and I'm sure, some of you do not. It's my attempt to help others think like me, and thereby behave in a more logical fashion, which should reduce their stress levels. It certainly reduces mine.
When I began the Logic Bomb Podcasts, it was for a couple of reasons; firstly, it was to allow me to practice my 'radio voice'. I have a dream of becoming a voice over artist, and felt the experience would be a boon. Secondly, it allowed me to vent in a way that I love, which I tend to do to people face-to-face, often interrupted by the other party, which could not happen here. I wanted to entertain, which is a crucial factor in everything I do. And, yes, I wanted to see if my friends would expand my listener base to their friends.
And that was the extent of where I saw it going.
Now, my stats are by no means absolute. I can tell you that I have learned that there are people listening to me, that I have never met, in South Korea, and China. I know this, because they have emailed me to either ask questions, or tell me how they like the show. There has not exactly been an onslaught of fan mail, but the pieces I have received have buoyed my day, and my spirits.
And it forced me to think of the new definition of 'fame'. I mean, in the old days, affecting people halfway around the globe could only happen with a certain level of success. Television, movies, music — something that translated into sales and marketability. However, with the advent of the internet, and the ease of information transfer, my show, which I put on two places (iTunes and PodcastAlley), has blossomed into a web of locales. I did a Google search of 'Jonsian Logic', and it came back with 4 or 5 pages of sites now linking to the podcast. This cost me no money, and I made no efforts to do so.
And so, being readily available in so many places, it means that huge amounts of people have the potential to stumble upon my little project. Which begs the question: does this make me famous, or has fame been so devalued that anyone can attain it?
Well, here's my two cents: the new format allows everyone an equal chance at notoriety. But the onus is on each individual to create a product that has appeal. Therefore, although anyone could listen to my podcast, people who keep listening to it, do so because they like it. Which is a sort of fame, albeit packaged in a different format.
This is inspirational for me. I do want to continue having complete strangers enjoy my content, and my take on life's problems. Hell, I want my friends to continue as well. And as for being 'famous', I know I'm not getting a parade, or having t-shirts made. But people who don't know me look forward to hearing me. And that is the dream of every performer.
The t-shirts will have to come from my band. Heh.
